Music

Introduction

At St Mary Redcliffe, we believe that music is a vital part of a well-rounded education. Rooted in our school's values of 'Hope, Empathy, Acceptance, Respect, Thankfulness, and Selflessness', our music curriculum empowers pupils to express themselves creatively, develop their talents, and engage with the rich cultural heritage of our diverse community.

Key Aims

Our primary music curriculum aims to:

  • Provide all pupils with the opportunity to learn an instrument and participate in ensemble performances
  • Develop pupils' musical knowledge, skills, and understanding through a progressive, sequenced programme of study
  • Foster a love of music and an appreciation for different genres, styles, and cultures
  • Enhance pupils' confidence, self-esteem, and collaborative skills through regular performances and concerts

Content and Skills

Pupils at St Mary Redcliffe will develop a secure understanding of the fundamental elements of music, including pitch, rhythm, melody, and harmony. They will learn to read and write music notation, as well as play a range of instruments, from percussion to strings and brass. Pupils will also have the opportunity to compose their own pieces, exploring different musical forms and styles.

Progression

Throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, pupils' musical knowledge and skills will build progressively. In the early years, the focus will be on developing a strong foundation in the basics of music, including singing, rhythm, and simple instrumental skills. As pupils progress, they will delve deeper into music theory, learn to play more complex instruments, and engage in more advanced ensemble performances.

Wider Impact

By providing a high-quality music education, we aim to enrich the lives of our pupils and prepare them for their next steps in education and beyond. The skills and confidence developed through music will support pupils' overall academic achievement, as well as their social and emotional wellbeing. Our music curriculum also aligns with the school's improvement priorities, contributing to the development of well-rounded, culturally-aware citizens who are ready to make a positive impact on their community and the world.
