Forest School at St Mary Redcliffe Primary

At St Mary Redcliffe, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Our Forest School programme is an essential part of our vibrant, inclusive and nurturing approach to education, providing every learner with unique opportunities to explore, discover and grow in natural settings. Rooted in our vision “Rooted in Love”, Forest School embodies our core values of hope, empathy, aspiration, respect, thankfulness, and selflessness by fostering a deep connection with the environment and each other.

What is Forest School?

Forest School is a learner-centred, outdoor learning approach where children engage in hands-on activities in natural environments. It encourages curiosity, resilience and independence, allowing learners to develop essential life skills alongside their academic progress.

Our Forest School Offer

  • All classes participate in regular Forest School sessions, ensuring every learner benefits from this enriching experience throughout the year.
  • Learners have access to Victoria Park, a beautiful local green space that offers diverse natural habitats and plenty of opportunities for exploration.
  • We are proud to have our very own Secret Garden on school grounds, a safe and inspiring space where learners can connect with nature daily.
  • Benefits for Learners’ Development

Forest School supports the holistic development of our learners by:

  • Enhancing social skills: Working collaboratively in teams nurtures empathy, respect, and selflessness.
  • Building confidence and independence: Learners take ownership of their learning, try new challenges, and solve problems creatively.
  • Promoting physical health and wellbeing: Outdoor activities boost fitness, coordination, and mental health.
  • Encouraging environmental stewardship: Through hands-on experiences, learners develop thankfulness and acceptance for the natural world.
  • Fostering emotional resilience and hope: Time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood, helping children develop a positive outlook.

How Forest School Reflects Our Vision and Values

Our Forest School programme is a living example of being “Rooted in Love”. It cultivates a sense of belonging and community, where every learner feels valued and accepted. By engaging with nature and peers in meaningful ways, learners practice empathy and respect, building strong foundations for lifelong learning and citizenship.

We warmly invite parents to support their child’s Forest School journey by encouraging curiosity about the natural world and discussing their outdoor learning experiences at home. For more information or to get involved, please contact our school office or visit us during one of our open events.

In summary, Forest School at St Mary Redcliffe Primary is more than just outdoor play—it’s an integral part of how we nurture hopeful, empathetic, and respectful learners who are ready to thrive both inside and outside the classroom, truly living our values every day.
